Considering this point, the swimming competition was conducted among the four houses (Nobgang, Kuengachholing, Phuentsopelri and Sangachhoekhor) not only for entertainment and physical exercises, but also to provide the children with a platform to showcase their swimming talents.

The memorable event was graced by the honorable principal Ms. Lhaki of Khuruthang MSS, which added to the glory to it. Making the event more fascinating, songs were also sung in between the programs. Towards the end of the event, the chief guest spoke on the importance of swimming.

21st century classroom

21st century classroom

The much-awaited concept of 21st century classroom was formally inaugurated by Dasho principal today. The new transformative style of teaching, the 21st century pedagogy, has been introduced after much deliberation at the national level and at the school level to meet the requirements of modern learning. The new strategy will involve pupil-centred learning where the teachers will be the facilitators. There will be more interactive classes and the use of information technology will be a prominent classroom feature hereafter. The use of technologies has become inevitable in acquainting students with the everyday changes of world. Thus it will be an important asset.

In an ideal setting of a 21st century classroom, the classes will be spacious and the number of students will be reduced so as to allow easy interactive sessions. Learning will be fun and there will be many classes involving learning through firsthand experiences. There will also be several ‘Brain Breaks’ in the form of songs and gestures during classes to help retain students’ attention. Therefore, the introduction of the new concept will be a boon to student-friendly learning.

UAFC mini stadium

UAFC mini stadium

UAFC mini stadium with artificial turf was inaugurated on the eve of Blessed Rainy day. The ceremony was graced by the Proprietor, Honourable Yab Dasho Ugyen Dorji. The turf was installed on AFC funding and it has two standard size futsal pitches. With extra turf at the center, it can be used for nine sided football field too.

Indeed a brainchild,  the mini stadium is seen to be of utmost importance not only to UA family but also for the general public. The turf is going to witness a lot of matches in the near future.

Football, as a sport, in Bhutan is still at a fetal stage requiring much nurturing and with the installation of the new artificial pitch, development is augmented to a new level. While the good old days of playing futsal in the streets might have been fun, but there is more to futsal than just fun. The future prospect of introducing it as a formal sport like any other, on a national or even International level, still exists. Not only that, players can further hone their skills in this small pitch as the stadium  also has night lighting facilities. Hence the establishment of the UAFC mini stadium is indeed seen to be a boon to Ugyen Academy, and more importantly, to the mass at large.

Rafting

Rafting Club

“The song of the river ends not at her banks but in the hearts of those who have loved her.”

                                                                                                                                                         -Buffalo Joe

The love for the river and its chilling effect is rampant in Ugyen Academy. The count down begins on Monday until weekend approaches. Students anxiously wait for weekend to row the boat and make memories. Thanks to the initiation of rafting club. The rafting club started last year in Ugyen Academy and the club is going on full swing. With students rowing the boat, screaming, laughing, and enjoying every bits of the adventurous sail.  Students find no need to adjust their sail for what beholds in front of the bravest is the adventure.

The rafting, this year, started last week and is still going on during weekends. It is the curiosity that keeps people growing and exploring. It turns out that little young minds are courageous and always prepared. As it’s rightly mentioned, ‘The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it, and turn it inside out.’ We discovered the innate potential of our students when they jeer on seeing the waves. It is the outrageous enthusiasm in exploring the realms of an aquatic life.

ROW, ROW, ROW your boat

Gently down the stream.

“A river seems a magic thing. A magic, moving, living part of the very earth itself.”

                                                                                                                                              - Laura Gilpin

The passion for writing and reading opens one’s mind and reaches the height of greater dimensions. In order to encourage and inculcate writing and reading habits, creative writing workshop was conducted in Ugyen Accademy. Student representatives from neighbouring schools( Punakha CS, Khuruthang MSS and Darshiding HSS) also attended the programme.

U.A was blessed to have Ms.Paro Anand. She is the author of 25 books for children and young adults including plays, short stories, novellas and novels. She is published in several anthologies and has written extensively on children’s literature. She is a World Record Holder, for helping over 3000 children make the World’s Longest Newspaper (850 metres long) in 11 Indian states in 13 languages.

At U.A it was led by one of the Bhutanese writers Pema Gyaltshen and guest Paro Anand. It was a feather on cap for we not only got to enjoy the talks and reading skills but also got the exposure to a world that was enclosed but we had not entered.

What motivated students was her word, “When I write, I get immersed into the world and colour the moods.  I’m the only person who likes traffic jam because that’s when I’m writing.” Students said that the workshop was very helpful as they learned how to play around with the words, they expressed their emotions through writing and it was conveyed.

The program concluded at 6:30 P.M and as a token of gratitude for having imparted such diverse knowledge, one of the students presented Paro Anand her sketch. The school would like to offer our heartfelt gratitude to our guest Paro Anand and Pema Gyaltshen for giving us their presence. We would also like to thank school administration team for taking the initiative and more so we thank our proprietor for having invited Paro Anand and Pema Gyaltshen to our school.
